RADIANT SILVER WORKS FOR THE INDIANA DERBY
LOUD AND CLEAR WORKS FOR THE GREEN HORSE DIRT SPRINT
Stella heaved a sigh as she mounted up on Rad, and allowed a small smile to cross her face. His record wasn't as pretty as she'd hoped it would be this time last year, but the newly three year old had proved himself worthy of working towards the Triple Crown. His first race of the season would run in a matter of days, and it was basically a warm up race to get him ready for his next start, a possible run in the Unicorn Horn Series. Loud And Clear and Marissa were already working at a trot over the dirt. Marissa was obviously deep in thought. She wondered how Belle would go this year, with a hectic schedule planned for the four year old. It was all turf races, besides her warm up start this weekend, because Sweetness Unlimited only liked racing on dirt. So Belle was headed for the senior turf sprints later in the year.
On into canter and each rider separately considered their upcoming races. Radiant Silver and Stella were entered in the Indiana Derby, a nine furlong dirt race for grade fives. With the competition at the same level as them, Stella hoped to secure Rad's third win here. Loud And Clear and Marissa were entered in the Green Horse Dirt Sprint, which had attracted only one other entrant. The six furlong race would hopefully result in a much needed win. Now that their muscles were warm and loose, the thoroughbreds were cued to gallop. No need to be asked again - they responded immediately with strong, fast transitions into their favourite pace. Their riders held them at a reasonable pace, so as not to tire them out before their actual races which took place on saturday. Belle inched ahead slightly, and Rad allowed her the space. He was a closer to he would make up the ground very quickly when the time came.
They entered the turn and Rad began to eat into Belle's half length lead, and as they rounded the turn he drew level with her. As the corner straightened into the stretch Rad let out a burst of speed, putting his nose in front of the sprinter filly's. But Belle was just getting started, and began to pour on the speed. Rad was fast, but he was no sprinter. Belle began to pull ahead despite Rad's speedy protest, and after a few more heart pounding moments both thoroughbreds crossed the line with Belle ahead by half a length. They were ready for their first starts of the year.
