GREAT REVENGE AND LIKE A LIONESS WORK FOR THE SILVER STRIDE STAKES*
It was with a bright smile that Marissa mounted up on her first ride of the day, Great Revenge. The blue blooded colt had taken his first race in style a few weeks ago, and had put in a faster time with each workout since. His next race was this weekend, and the colt was well prepared for it. Joining him for this workout and the race was Like A Lioness ridden by Sarah. The big grey filly had gone hard in her first start last weekend for second place, and had bounced back quickly to run her second start this weekend. Sarah swung her leg over the filly's back, also smiling. Her first workout of the day had just ended well, and she was feeling positive about both horses' futures.
The pair began their warm up on the dirt track at a quick and bouncy trot. The pair of greys looked stunning together, and they were unique. Lila had a chestnutty tinge to her coat, whereas Rev was covered in dark dapples. Lila was a bit of a feminist and hated colts, whereas Rev was aggressive with just about everybody and kept trying to scare his workout partner into submission. The filly bared her teeth back at him, and seemed prepared to strike. They hated each other, which was both a good and a bad thing. Good because they'd work harder to beat one another, bad because they'd probably try to kill each other in the process. Rev was the aggressive one, and had an aggressive rider to match. Marissa was more than capable of handling the the colt, and she held him at a decent distance from the filly. Lila wasn't innocent though. If Rev touched her she'd touch him back. With her heels. Hard.
On into canter, still keeping good horizontal distance from one another. Great Revenge was on the outside, fighting Marissa the whole way for his head. Sarah concentrated on Lila, and smiled as she imagined winning the Silver Stride Stakes together. It would be their first win, if they managed to snag it. The race was nine furlongs over dirt for two year olds only, and there were only two entries besides Lila and Rev. They were Palisades Pirate and Maximum Impact. Palisades Pirate was out of Palisades Silver and sired by Shiver Me Timbers. Owned by Stride Of Perfection Stables, he had placed second in his first start behind Great Revenge, and had challenged the colt for the lead throughout the race. Maximum Impact was owned by Valkyrie Stables, and had run third in his first start at the beginning of the month. As a closer, the colt was likely to really challenge in the final furlongs. Lila was a stalker, and in her first race had pushed the leaders hard in the second half of the race. She wouldn't do that in this race, since she needed to conserve energy for the stretch. Palisades Pirate would have that job again, anyway.
Marissa growled at Rev as he tossed his head and put a tiny buck into his canter. He was really fighting to gallop, especially because Like A Lioness was cantering slightly ahead of him. The pair were entered in the same race, and Marissa hoped Rev could pull his second win out of it. It would be a challenge, of course. The colt they had beaten in his first race, Palisades Pirate, was entered and no doubt he'd pressure Rev the whole way. Like A Lioness had run second in her first race and would be going harder for the win this time out. And their other competitor, Maximum Impact, had the advantage of being a closer. He'd be able to conserve his energy throughout. Marissa would have to be careful not to let Rev work too hard in the race, and maybe make a break for it earlier so that he'd be going all out before the others even began to make their moves.
As they finished the second turn into the homestretch, Marissa took hold of a chunk of mane, and released Rev. The colt blasted away, pulling ahead of Lila. The filly dug in, and tore after him at a ferocious pace. They were only doing two furlongs to burn excess energy before the race this weekend, but of course with two horses this competitive it had turned into a race all of it's own. Powerful strides still carried the colt ahead, and Lila was just approaching full speed. Sarah cursed, urging the filly on with her hands. But it was too late to catch up, and Rev crossed the line a full length ahead. Cursing again, Sarah made a mental note to set Lila off earlier in the actual race, so they could actually catch the colt before he got going. She'd somehow forgotten that Rev was related to Rising Fury, and could bolt like that at a moment's notice. Lila seemed furious, too. She'd just lost to a colt and it would not be happening again if she could help it. The Silver Stride Stakes was shaping up to be a bit of a match race.
