SWEETNESS UNLIMITED WORKS FOR THE UNICORN HORN DIRT MILE*
SWEET LIKE SUGAR WORKS FOR THE UNICORN HORN JUVENILE DIRT SPRINT*
Alright, Sweeties. Olivia said brightly. The two Sweet Sugar Cane sired thoroughbreds looked at her expectantly. Blaze came up behind her, fastening his helmet. He motioned to leg her up onto the tall dark bay mare, and she accepted. He was able to mount up on Sweet Like Sugar on his own. They set off onto the dirt track at a brisk trot to warm up. Blaze was still getting to know Sweet Like Sugar, who was nicknamed Candy. The filly was out of Hall of Fame sprinter mare Dash Of Sugar, and she had inherited a lot of her dam. The two year old could be unpredictable, calm, unruly and relaxed. She was intelligent, though. He had ridden her half sister Sugar Rush to the verge of grade three last year, and they expected the same from Candy, if not better.
Olivia had been riding Sweetness Unlimited for two years now and so she knew her well. The now five year old mare was coming off a great four year old season and was expected to do even better this season, which would be her last. They hadn't won since October, and had placed third in their most recent race, the Breeder's Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. With Crowned Queen and Sugar Rush due to run in the Unicorn Horn Dirt Sprint, Sweetness was entered in the Dirt Mile, which would test her stamina. She was definitely capable of the longer distance, but was primarily a sprinter. Her goals for this year was to compete and win in the Senior Sprinter Series and win a Breeder's Cup race. Which one was uncertain at this point.
Moving on into canter, Blaze reflected on their last race and considered their next. Their last race had been their first and they had placed second. Their next race was the Unicorn Horn Juvenile Dirt Sprint, and they would face off with two other fillies for the win. The first was Intrepid Racing's Lilith Wind, who was sired by Speed Demon and out of Windbreaker, who was also sired by Sweet Sugar Cane. Lilith Wind had already started twice, which could be detrimental to the filly's performance this weekend. Two year olds were generally not fit enough yet to bounce back in time for a third race in a month. Dark Maiden on the other hand probably was the best rested. She had raced in the second week of January for second place. Blaze knew nothing of her bloodlines though.
For Sweetness Unlimited, it was a big field full of hard to beat horses. In gate one would be Ventura. the Rising Fury filly sired by Impressario. The four year old was tough to beat, and had a record of 42-19-15-8 to back that up. Most recently, Ventura had beaten Sweetness to the post in the Breeder's Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, so she was top competition for the Unicorn Horn Dirt Mile. Also from Stride Of Perfection Stables in the next gate was Aquatic Addiction. The grade two colt had mostly run in small races, but it looked like this year would be a better year for him. He was on the verge of grade one with a record of 35-12-13-7. In gate four would be Witch Creek Stables Speed Demon/El Sol Del Mar colt, Mastermind. With a record of 37-20-13-2, Mastermind was already off to a flying start after a win the Dubai World Sprint.
In gate five would be Jazzaway, from Nature Blue Stables. The four year old colt was grade three with a record of 29-7-7-8, and was possibly ready to break out of his shell. Lastly there was Midnight Sun in gate six, also from Nature Blue Stables. She was grade three with a record of 15-7-3-3. Sweetness herself was to break from gate three. With a record of 31-9-7-10, Ness wasn't the highest graded horse. But her record for last year alone had been 16-7-5-3, proving she was getting better with age. She was a versatile runner, although she showed a slight preference for the preceder position, which meant no matter the positions of other horses during the race, she would be comfortable and able to put her best foot forward.
It was time to gallop and the older mare dug in, ready to show the two year old filly who was boss. Candy kept up, however, allowing her workout partner to hold the lead. When the turn was behind them, Candy burst forward, taking the lead immediately. Olivia smirked slightly, knowing the two year old was about to learn a lesson. She all but dropped the reins, and Sweetness roared into top gear, sprinting away from the top of the stretch like her tail was on fire. Candy's ears pinned against the wind, and she was going full out, but she was not yet a match for the older mare, who took back the lead within moments. They passed the finish with Sweetness Unlimited a full two lengths in front of the younger horse, who snorted in apparent disbelief, like she couldn't believe she'd lost. Sweet Like Sugar had learned her lesson, not to underestimate her competition. They were ready for the Unicorn Horn.
