CROWNED QUEEN AND SUGAR RUSH WORK FOR THE UNICORN HORN DIRT SPRINT*
It was incredible how well Crowned Queen and Sugar Rush had done together last year, and now it was time for a new challenge. Their first race of the year was the Unicorn Horn Dirt Sprint, where they would come up against older horses for the first time. It was a risk, but if you don't take risks you don't get the payoff, and for either Jewel or Sugar to win the race it would be a huge payoff.
The pair of thoroughbreds began their warmup with a brisk trot, and after a lap they moved on into canter. The Unicorn Horn Dirt Sprint was a six furlong race, and obviously on dirt. It was for three year olds and over, and had attracted a field of five. Besides the two Star Thoroughbreds fillies, there was Flying Colours sired Forbidden To Fly, Feline Frenzy and Reflected in Water. Reflected in Water was also a three year old filly, who had come in second behind Crowned Queen in the Breeder's Cup Juvenile Sprint. She was from Nature Blue Stables and had a record of 13-6-4-1. Feline Frenzy from Witch Creek Stables was five years old, and had a record of 34-14-8-5. Forbidden To Fly was a Stride Of Perfection stallion, aged five with a record of 53-25-17-9. He was Crowned Queen's half brother.
After a lap of trotting, the chestnut and the bay fillies moved on into canter. Olivia took the time to think over her personal goals for the filly. She wanted to reach grade one with her as soon as possible, and the filly only needed another four wins to achieve it. Then she wanted to sweep the Sprinter Crown preps and go for the Sprinter Triple Crown, separating from Sugar Rush who would go to the Sprinter Triple Tiara. The races after that weren't currently clear. But Jewel would almost definitely be going to the Breeder's Cup Sprint, to follow on from her spectacular win in the Breeder's Cup Juvenile Sprint. With a two year old record of 20-9-7-2, Jewel was looking at a possible Horse of the Year Award.
Beside Olivia on Sugar Rush, Blaze was having similar thoughts. He wanted to get away from Jewel for a while so that Sugar could catch a break. Her record of 19-6-4-6 showed she was just was consistent as her stablemate, she just needed a race without her once in a while. Their next race would prove a tough one, no doubt. That had gone without saying when they'd first entered. Sugar was a front runner, as was Feline Frenzy. Sugar didn't like to share the lead, and so Feline Frenzy would either have to give it to her or risk having her set such a high pace, she tired out trying to keep up. And so would Sugar. The siblings Crowned Queen and Forbidden To Fly had the upper hand. Jewel was a preceder, and Forbidden To Fly was a mid packer. They would be able to conserve their energy as much as possible to battle it out in a furious speed duel in the final furlongs of the race.
And now, it was time to gallop. The two fillies switched to gallop right on cue and headed for the turn with Sugar Rush pushing her nose into the lead. Jewel didn't care - she was a stalker with the flair of a closer. They rounded the turn quickly and headed into the stretch with strong strides. Sugar bounded ahead right as the turn ended, cued early by Blaze. Jewel moved sideways towards the outer rail as Sugar blocked her clear path to the finish, and began to pour on the speed. Powerful strides carried both fillies to the finish, but Jewel was showing just how fast she could go when there was someone to beat, and she was eating into Sugar's lead fast. It was going to be close though, with only metres to go the fillies were neck and neck. Jewel threw herself forward in one final lunge, enough to get her nose in front. It was her winning move.
The pair slowed up and galloped out, before turning back and trotting back to the gap. They were ready to sprint their way to the throne.
