LOUD AND CLEAR WORKS FOR THE UNICORN HORN TURF SPRINT*
WINGED PEGASUS WORKS FOR THE UNICORN HORN JUVENILE TURF SPRINT*
From Winged Pegasus' back, Olivia felt on top of the world despite his short height. The two year old colt was the result of the crossing of two Hall of Fame turf sprinters owned by Stride of Perfection Stables, and already they had won a race together. Now Pegasus was due to run in the Unicorn Horn Juvenile Turf Sprint against his twin sister and three other budding champions. It would be interesting to see which twin came out on top of the other, but Olivia had no doubt both would one day be champions. Beside Olivia on Loud and Clear was Marissa. Loud and Clear was a good filly, right on the edge of grade one. This year she was being pointed to the Senior Turf Sprinter Series, which ran late in the year, so there was plenty of time for her to get sharp and win heaps of races before taking on the series. First on her hit list was the Unicorn Horn Turf Sprint.
The two thoroughbreds warmed up together on the turf track at a brisk trot. Olivia zig zagged Pegasus to make sure she had his full attention before they moved on to canter, while Marissa and Belle peeled off to do a half circle. It was the last workout of the morning and it was starting to get quite warm out. Both riders wiped their brows simultaneously, and then put their horses into canter. The Unicorn Horn Turf Sprint was a six furlong turf race for three year olds and above. Entered was four year old superstar Innocent Passion, who had a record of 42-18-12-12. She was coming off a second place in the Breeder's Cup Turf Sprint and ran as a preceder. In gate two, also from Stride Of Perfection Stables, was the Speed Demon x Deadly Desires colt Demonic Desires. He was also a superstar with a record of 19-9-10-0 and ran as a stalker. Paranormal Hunter was the final entrant and she was the rising star. With a record of 15-8-6-1, the Witch Creek filly ran as a closer. Loud And Clear had a record of 38-12-14-7 and was coming off a win. She also ran as a preceder and as she liked to take the lead halfway through the race anyway, she would step up and lead the race from the get go and hopefully the risk would pay off.
The Unicorn Horn Juvenile Turf Sprint was a six furlong turf race for two year olds. Athena's Desires, Pegasus' twin, would start from gate one. She had debuted at the beginning of the month and had run second, so she would be well rested and ready to fight her twin tooth and nail for the lead and the win. Daring Vision would start from gate two. He was also sired by Pegasus Wings and out of Once Upon A Dream. Having raced twice already this month he probably would be too tired to truly challenge, but there wasn't really any doubt he'd be with the twins the whole way in stalker position. Next there was Call Me Crooked, who had also raced twice already this month. She didn't really have the bloodlines for the sprints. But she would be right behind the twins in stalker position, too. Lastly there was Siren Call, the horse who had beaten Athena's Desires in their first race. Like Athena he was also well rested having not raced since his debut and first win.
With race strategising behind them, and the pair of thoroughbreds warmed up, the riders sent them flying into gallop. With strong strides that lengthened each time, the horses pounded around the turn without slowing down. Winged Pegasus hugged the rail, and gained a little ground. With the stretch straightening out before them, each put on a burst of speed, their hind quarters pushing out powerfully while their front legs stretched forward. Loud And Clear pulled forward and ahead, but not for long. Pegasus kicked it up a notch and burst forward too, his nose coming to her shoulder. Their hearts pounded in their chests as they closed on the finish. Winged Pegasus was keeping up with the older filly, which was impressive given that she was twice the two year old's age. As they passed by the finish, Olivia knew Winged Pegasus was her next born champion, and Marissa knew Belle wouldn't go down without a fight. They were ready for the Unicorn Horn Series.
