GREAT REVENGE AND WILD DAISY WORK FOR THE WIRE FINISH CUP
Rev walked onto the turf like he owned it. He'd been bred for the dirt track, but turf was in his blood too and he could race just as well on the green if they so desired to enter him in a turf race. Wild Daisy, on the other hand, was built for turf through and through. She moved over it with grace and pride, ignoring the colt who was displaying aggression towards her. She was two inches taller than him and could easily knock a hoof to his head if she wanted, but she was in front of him and so she didn't care what he did as long as he didn't pass her. Great Revenge was fighting for his head, longing to show the big black filly who was bos. Marissa held him in check, but it took some effort. It would be far easier once they really got moving.
The pair trotted side by side, but with some distance between them. There could be no lashing out at one another. They were both dominant personalities and each were very competitive, which made working them together both a nightmare and a dream. The speed the two were able to muster was incredible. They were working for The Wire Finish Cup Juvenile Turf and Dirt, races that had attracted some tough competition so far. It would be a tough race, hard to win, but both juveniles already had two wins behind them in three starts - and as they were coming off losses, they'd only be more competitive.
When they moved into canter, Marissa could relax slightly for a moment and allow her mind to wander a little. The Wire Finish Cup Juvenile Dirt field contained three other colts and his half sister Impressionable. The colts were My Man O War, Saintly Touch and Jericho. Winning the race wasn't going to be easy, but going the distance was a walk in the park for Rev. He was bred for the Triple Crown and excelled at a mile to eleven furlongs so far. Depending on Furious Flyer's performance, either or both would head to the big races next year. If one didn't, he would go to the three year old mile races instead.
Wild Daisy was entered in the The Wire Finish Cup Juvenile Turf. It was a field of five following a scratching, and was to run nine furlongs on the turf. Stride Of Perfection Stables had sent two fillies, Pandora and Devil's Flair. Then there was Spitterfly from Akita Rose Stables, and Take Flight from Valkyrie Stables. From what Sarah had seen of their racing, none of the other entrants were front runners, but a couple were known to pressure leaders into running faster. This meant Daisy needed to keep her cool if other horses nosed in front of her. But Sarah knew the filly wouldn't like it, and she would push as hard as she needed to to secure the win.
They rounded the final turn and upon reaching the two furlong pole, launched into gallop. Rev had been fighting for this for the whole workout and finally had his head. He went into full sprint mode, taking the lead from Daisy and unleashing the speed monster in her. The colt's ears were pinned and he took long, strong strides, moving ahead of his rival with each step. She roared into high gear, powerfully punching her hooves against the turf and sending chunks flying behind her. She was not used to being behind and so when a clump of grass and dirt hit her in the neck she got a shock. Veering off course, Daisy lost momentum and Rev flew over the finish line triumphantly. What happened? Marissa called back, the grin evident in her voice. Sarah and Daisy caught up in the gallop out. You know what I just realised? She's never seen anyone's heels on the track before because no one's ever got the drop on her like that. Rev flicked up some dirt,it hit her and she freaked out a bit. We'll have to work on that.. Top finish from you though. Sarah replied thoughtfully. Marissa continued to grin, rubbing Rev's neck as they dropped back through to trot. He was so mad, he wasn't going to lose. She said, and she knew the colt still wasn't entirely satisfied. He'd still go into the race hungry for another top finish just like that.
