FLY BY DARKNESS WORKS FOR HER TRIPLE TIARA CAMPAIGN
It was the beginning of March, and Flyby had a tough month of racing ahead of her. She was getting ready for the Triple Tiara, the first race of which was the Acorn Stakes in May. On the cards for her campaign was the Forward Gal Stakes, the Black Caviar Stakes, and the Ruffian Handicap. The Black Caviar Stakes was actually a turf race, and Flyby needed to run on the turf now and then because she was likely to go for the Canadian Triple Crown after the Tiara. It was not yet certain whether she would run all three jewels of the Tiara - there were other talented fillies at Star Thoroughbreds with the same distance and surface preferences.
Sarah swung her leg over the chestnut's back and the filly moved off before she even had her stirrup. She was eager to get out and do her job. The three year old had impeccable lineage, and it was only a matter of time before she got her first win of the season. She had come to Star Thoroughbreds late last year, and had run her first race under Sarah in the Breeder's Cup Juvenile Fillies. They'd come in third, which was certainly not a bad result considering the caliber of competition and the fact that she was still new to STBS. Since then, Flyby had had two runs. A third place in the Middlient Derby, and a second place in the Hiolio Derby. It was a good start to the season, and hopefully it would get better very soon.
A brisk trot quickly warmed Flyby's muscles, and before long the pair were cantering. Flyby's long legs covered ground with ease. She hadn't even broken a sweat yet. Sarah took one hand off the rains to rub the filly's neck affectionately. Flyby had quickly become close to her heart and was one of her special horses. Sarah had ridden her half sister Born To Soar right into the Hall of Fame, and her half brother Born To Impress to victory in the Kentucky Derby last year. Flyby had champion bloodlines, and it was time she showed that to everyone, not just Star Thoroughbreds.
With a race coming up this weekend, Sarah didn't want to push Flyby too hard, so today they were just doing an easy mile long gallop. The filly switched to the race pace right on cue, accelerating to a comfortable speed. With no other horses on the track, the young thoroughbred was quite happy to just enjoy a calm run. There was no competition, and therefore no reason to tear up the track chasing someone down. Sarah smiled to herself, thinking back to when she rode Born To Soar. She could feel and see the same fire in Flyby, and knew it was only a matter of time before the real Flyby shone through on the race track. The filly had it in her to win some big races. She could easily go far. This would be her year to do it.
