BEYOND THE STARS WORKS FOR THE MAY MAIDEN DIRT
Mounting up on her only two year old mount, Stella felt a fierce determination to succeed running through her. Beyond The Stars was a very nicely bred filly and Stella knew she had it in her to go right to the top, in the blink of an eye. She'd had six weeks off racing to train hard, come back for a second place in the first week of April and been off for another month since. Not because they didn't want to race her, but because there wasn't many maiden races after the first few months of the year. Her workout times had improved drastically in the time she'd been in full training with no race dates to work around, and Stella knew it was time she was put back on the racecourse to show her full potential. One could only race their stablemates so many times before it got old.
Star moved gracefully over the dirt, her hooves barely touching it. Stella rose in time with her trot, her eyes focused between the filly's dark ears. She was entered in the May Maiden Dirt, the first race suitable for her since the beginning of April. It had drawn a field of seven, and all like Star were inexperienced. The majority were owned by new stables. There was only one horse Stella knew something about in terms of bloodlines, the others were just names to her. Whispering Melody, sold from the now closed Akita Rose Stables, was owned by Firestone Racing. The filly's sire, Seattle Song, was the sire of G1 Mystical Melody. Her dam, Ebony Gold Lady, had foaled G1 twins Dazzling Dame and Infinite Warcry. With her record of 5-0-3-2 Whispering Melody was poised to win.
Conquistadora, a filly from Sugarhill Farm, had placed two for two so far and looked to be a threat. The next entrant, a colt named Lime Light from Grayson Meadows, had run twice for fourth and sixth place. Honorary, also from Grayson Meadows, was a filly who had run twice for second and fifth. Silver Lining, a third entrant from Grayson Meadows, was a colt who had raced once so far for fourth place. The final entrant was Saving Sanity from Blue Cross Estates. She was unraced as of yet.
Given that the field had mostly run only twice, Stella did not know their preferred racing positions. Beyond The Stars herself was a closer, and so they would coast at the back of the back until the time came to make their bid for the lead. Star had raced three times so far, for a second, a third and a fifth. The second place was most recent, just over a month ago, and it had been a close, close race. Stella had a feeling this race would be close, too. Hopefully Star would be able to bring the win home.
After cantering for their allotted distance, Stella shifted her weight closer to the horse beneath her and cued her to gallop. Star made the switch immediately, stretching her body as she accelerated. The straight stretch of dirt seemed to be eaten up by her long, powerful strides and it seemed like no time at all before Stella had to pull the filly up and back down to canter, then trot, and off the track. Star resisted at first, but then gave in. She was an intelligent filly and she was great to ride. Stella had no doubt she would pull out all the stops to get that all important first win in the May Maiden Dirt.
