IMPASSIONED NUT WORKS FOR THE MAY JUVENILE TURF FACEOFF
Chris mentally prepared himself before climbing onto Impassioned Nut. The colt detested him. Natalie was there to distract Imp, stroking his face soothingly while the colt rested his head in her arms. Chris put a foot in the stirrup and swung his other leg over, taking up the reins quickly as Imp's head shot up and his ears pinned back. Have fun... Natalie grinned, stepping aside to let the thoroughbred and rider past.
Imp trotted briskly, head up and ears back, attitude just oozing from him. Chris smiled to himself. While the young thoroughbred hated him, the feeling wasn't mutual. He seem to bed able to get the best of Imp, and he liked that. Eventually, the horse would get over himself. Hopefully. Then they could have a real partnership, and be a team. Chris was aware of the eyes on him, and knew that he had to continue to get results to continue to ride the horse, and all the other horses he had been contracted to ride. His position here wasn't yet permanent - he was on probation for three months. Star Thoroughbreds seemed happy with him though, so he wasn't worried.
Imp moved on into canter when asked, with a slight head toss. What he really wanted to do was gallop! Little wonder - the colt was seriously talented and for good reason. He was sired by Impassioned Wind, and out of The True Nut. Impassioned Wind was the sire of STBS's Triple Crown Champion, Furious Passion. The True Nut was a grade one Breeder's Cup winning mare inducted in the Hall of Fame. So yeah, it was kind of a big deal to be riding a horse like Imp. Chris knew there were big plans for the colt's future. Whether he remained in them depended on his success with Imp.
The May Juvenile Turf Faceoff was their next start. It would be Imp's fourth race, so he was still relatively inexperienced compared with some of the other two year olds. That was because Star Thoroughbreds had acquired him only two months ago. The May Juvenile Turf Faceoff was a ten furlong race for two year olds only. It had attracted only a small field of four, but one of the colts already had three wins behind him in six starts. That was Refute, from Valkyrie Stables. The other one to really watch out for was Lissome, the nicely bred filly from Intrepid Racing. She'd broken her maiden last week after five tries and could be on a roll, given her other nice results. Criss Cross from new stable Blue Cross Estates was the final entrant, and she was unraced.
Refute was a front runner, Lissome a stalker. Imp was also a stalker. The unraced filly Criss Cross was a wildcard. Chris just needed to ensure Imp didn't lose his cool. He could be aggressive towards others even while racing, and an interference could cost them. With all he knew about the race and it's entrants in mind, Chris leaned close to the colt and gave the signal to gallop. Imp roared into action, finally having got what he wanted. Chris let go of the chunk of mane and rated the colt carefully so that he didn't go too hard. This wasn't a timed workout, but a last gallop before his next race.
Imp rounded the turn and headed into the stretch, automatically picking up speed. Chris didn't push him on, but allowed the colt to go as fast as he wanted for the last two furlongs of their workout. With no competitor, and no one urging him on though, Imp didn't go a lot faster. They crossed the finish at a moderately fast pace and Chris had no issue slowing Imp down, amazingly. Natalie waited at the gap, and called out encouragement to Imp as the horse got closer. Imp cantered the last few strides and skidded to a stop in front of her, checking her pockets immediately before nuzzling her. Chris slid off, rolling his eyes slightly before kissing her on the cheek. The horse was just as in love with her as he was.
