VENGEANCE WORKS FOR THE HUMANA STAKES WITH FURIOUS FLYER
After a successful run in the Governor's Cup last week, Marissa was feeling renewed confidence with Vengeance. Not that she had lost confidence in Ven in the first place. The moody but spirited filly was definitely a favourite of hers, and she was definitely showing her blue blood. Vengeance hadn't run in an under card race yet, and for good reason. The two year old bay was out of Breeder's Cup Classic winner Lusitania, and by Triple Crown Champion Admiral's Revenge.
Working with them this morning was Furious Flyer, ridden by Sarah. Furious was also champion bred, with Triple Tiara Champion Born To Soar as his dam, and Triple Crown Champion Furious Passion as his sire. Unsurprisingly, he was a big, strong, and absolutely stunning colt. Both horses also had Hall of Fame granddams and grandsires in their bloodlines - Vengeance had True Enough and Bank On Silver, Furious Flyer had Rising Fury and The Natural.
Beginning with a brisk trot, the pair began their warm up on the dirt track. Both had strong personalities, and both being front runners they were arguing over who lead the other through the workout. Their riders kept a safe horizontal distance between them, because both horses were known to be aggressive towards workout partners. But they would bring out the best in each other, and that was what mattered.
The Humana Stakes was a ten furlong dirt race open to two year olds, and had attracted a very talented field of five, including Great Revenge's twin half sisters Meritorious and Impressionable, the Impressario x Moondance filly Impress the Moonlight, and Witch Creek's filly Nirvana, whose dam was from Star Thoroughbreds lines. All the competition had three wins.
Moving on into canter, Sarah thought about Furious Flyer. Also on two wins, the colt was sure to be a standout in future. He was bred for the Triple Crown, and he would certainly gain momentum as the season went on - currently he was lightly raced, as before last week he hadn't run since May.
The time came to gallop, a full four furlong breeze. The pair took off practically flying, slowing down only very slightly when they reached the turn. As they finished rounding the corner, they accelerated again, still neck and neck. The were very equally capable, and it was going to be a real fight to the finish. They eyed each other off as they raced down to the wire, each daring the other to go faster and faster. Crossing the line, it was unclear who had beaten the other. What was clear was that the pair had a bright future. And they would meet again for round two.
