WILD DAISY WORKS FOR THE WITH ANTICIPATION STAKES WITH IMPASSIONED NUT
The With Anticipation Stakes was fast approaching and Star Thoroughbreds had decided to put Wild Daisy up for it. The filly had started out strong, winning her first two races, and hadn't won since. It was now the end of July, and she'd won last in January. Daisy actually behaved like she was wild sometimes. This race was practically her last chance under Sarah and then she'd be tried with one of the new male jockeys who had a firm hand and a zero tolerance policy.
Working with Daisy today was Impassioned Nut, ridden by Chris. The two year old colt was racing well, with two wins, two seconds and a fourth behind him now. It was possible this colt could be a Turf Triple Crown hope next year, but given his lack of experience so far they were being careful where they raced him. He had big competition in stablemate Indian Night, even though the other colt was a miler, so either or both of them could end up running in the Breeder's Cup Juvenile Turf at the end of the year.
Daisy pinned her ears at the colt she trotted next to, warning him not to touch her. Imp's ears were already flat against his skull, and he trotted with his backside slightly angled towards the filly. Chris saw trouble coming and gave the colt a swift one legged kick to get him away from the filly. The colt hated him, but somehow he seemed to get the best of the horse. Imp scooted a few steps sideways, away from where he'd been kicked. With more distance between them, the horses cooled the attitude a bit and were able to focus better.
On into canter and Sarah considered the With Anticipation Stakes. Daisy was up against a very strong field, and she'd want to lead it wire to wire. Their chances of winning were slim, because there was at least one other front runner and so the pace was going to be suicidal. Sarah was kind of considering scratching, but she still wanted to give Daisy once last chance. The filly had it, she could do it. She had beaten these horses before and she could do it again. She just needed to focus, to listen, to behave.
Side by side the pair cantered towards the gallop point. They'd do a five furlong gallop today, just enough to burn excess energy without tiring them. Daisy needed to be ready but not too fresh for the race. Imp and Chris broke into gallop a second before them, and Daisy immediately fought back for the lead. Sarah tried to rate the filly but it was futile until she had her head in front of Impassioned Nut.
A furlong passed, and then two. Daisy was content now that she had the lead. They entered the turn, with Imp falling back slightly to Daisy's flank. Sarah was sure the filly would sing now if she could for happiness. As the turn ended though, Imp came back fighting. With two furlongs to go, they were nose to nose again. Wild Daisy dug in, roaring into action. But the colt wasn't about to back down.
They flew down the stretch, legs a blur from sheer speed. As they crossed the line, it was unclear who had won. What was clear was Daisy was fired up and ready for a fight to the death - hopefully she'd bring it in the With Anticipation Stakes.
