PASSIONATE FLYER WORKS FOR THE JOE HIRSCH TURF CLASSIC WITH BLUE ME AWAY
Passionate Flyer had always raced sort of averagely. Now five years old, his best season had been as a three year old when he got five whens. Now, he had eleven wins, and this was his last season. Sarah was determined to get him to grade one, but didn't want the well bred colt wasted in undercard races. So he had nearly always run in the big races, despite the fact that the colt seemed to perform better with less pressure on him. Sarah wouldn't listen to anyone though. Prince had won the King George XV Stakes back in April which had shown he did have the talent to do better in HOTY races.
Today, they were working for the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic. It was a ten furlong turf race open to three year olds and over, and the competition was pretty much the same sort of level as Prince. Working with them today was Blue Me Away, who was Prince's regular workout partner, and Stella, who had been riding him since Blaze left. She hadn't gotten a win out of the four year old colt yet, but it was only a matter of time.
Beginning with a trot to warm up, Sarah went over the competition for the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic in her mind. Stride of Perfection Stables colt Ode to Glory would break from gate one. He was a colt who had the breeding, but it didn't really translate into his racing performance. Blue Me Away had tied with him for the win in the Breeder's Cup Juvenile Turf, and that was pretty much the colt's greatest achievement. In this race however, Ode To Glory looked to be the one to beat.
In the next gate would be Bowen Arrow from Nature Blue Stables. He was a four year old grade three who had had a winning streak early in the year, but hadn't raced since April. Abastor was the final entrant, a four year old grade one whose best season had been as a two year old. All in all, the field was fairly even. They were all sort of at the same level, despite grade differences.
After cantering for a while, the two thoroughbreds burst into gallop right on cue. Blue pushed into the lead and Prince adopted the preceder position off his flank. As the turn ended, both horses lengthened their strides and accelerated powerfully. Blue Me Away held onto his lead but Passionate Flyer didn't let him gain an inch and they crossed the finish with Blue Me Away only ahead by a half length.
