CROWNED QUEEN WORKS FOR THE SHINING STAKES*
With Olivia gone with Blaze, Sarah took over riding Crowned Queen. Luckily Jewel didn't really attach to people, so the rider change didn't affect her whatsoever. Sarah had now been working with her for three weeks, and there was a slight but obvious improvement in her times. Sarah was a little more firm with the thoroughbred than Olivia had been, which could explain it. Jewel was difficult to handle under saddle, but an angel from the ground.
Sarah lead her down to the track, and used the mounting block to climb aboard. Marissa was just finishing up with Rev’s cool down, and grinned at Sarah as they passed. Jewel and Rev seemed to glare at each other. Sarah was in slightly better spirits this week, and smiled back. Things were starting to look up. She had a group of riders trying out on Monday afternoon, and hopefully out of the ten they’d take on a few.
Jewel gave a toss of her head and broke into trot without being asked – this was the beginning of her uncooperativeness. Sarah quickly brought her back to walk, and then stopped her, making the horse stand still for ten seconds. After that, she set the thoroughbred off again at a quick trot. Jewel was entered in the Shining Stakes, the first leg of the Sprinter Tiara. It was a five furlong race on dirt, and after two scratchings there was only one other entrant – Wishing For A Heroine.
It was a disappointing turn out for the big race, but Wishing For A Heroine would be good competition nonetheless. They would have entered Sugar Rush as well, but that filly needed a break from running against her stronger stablemate for a while. With a one in two chance of winning the Shining Stakes, it was win or lose. Sarah knew that Wishing For A Heroine wasn’t a front runner, and neither was Crowned Queen. But for a five furlong, two horse race, it would be just like a workout. With lots of people cheering them on. They would either go for it from the start, or they’d hang back and pressure Wishing For A Heroine to lead. Sarah would decide when the time came.
With a tiny touch of her heels and a slight give of rein, Sarah asked Jewel to canter. Of course, the filly was only too happy to oblige to going faster and decided instead that she would gallop. Cue the eye roll. Sarah brought her back to canter after a bit of an argument, and then they continued on for a short while until they reached the three furlong marker in the middle of the turn. Time to gallop!
Jewel immediately moved it, accelerating so fast Sarah couldn’t stop her now if she tried. She was like a freight train as she powered into the straight, flinging up clumps of dirt behind her with each kick of her hind legs. With each stride Jewel showed her class, reminding Sarah what she was made of. Hall of Fame material! Jewel was ready to shine like a diamond in the Shining Stakes.
