LIKE A LIONESS WORKS FOR THE AUGUST JUVENILE DIRT FACEOFF
SWEET LIKE SUGAR WORKS FOR THE HOLLYWOOD STARLET STAKES
August was a pretty huge month all around. Star Thoroughbreds had all of their stock due to run at least once this month, some twice and some could possibly run even three times. Like A Lioness and Sweet Like Sugar were workout partners for now, but at the end of the month they were both scheduled for the Dixiana Breeder's Futurity. It would be a fight to the finish. The two thoroughbreds would head to a race each before then, though. Like A Lioness was headed to the colt heavy August Juvenile Dirt Faceoff, which was run over a mile. Sweet Like Sugar was entered in the Hollywood Starlet Stakes the following week, which so far featured only a small field.
Beginning with a trot to warm up, the two fillies headed out onto the dirt track. Sweet Like Sugar was a gorgeous dappled grey, standing at about sixteen hands high with a pretty head. She was ridden by the new rider, Jason, who was now in his second week at Star Thoroughbreds. Like A Lioness was an interesting colour for a thoroughbred. Bay, but with many white hairs flecked through her coat, she looked almost grey. Lila stood at 16.2hh and was ridden by Sarah.
The day was fine, a good omen for the weekend's racing. The two thoroughbreds moved side by side in harmony for now, and the riders rode in silence. Jason wasn't much of a talker, Sarah noticed. He was a quiet soul, but good with the horses on the ground and riding. She didn't mind that they didn't talk during the workout, unless they needed to. It was nice just to hear the sounds of the horses, and the wind and the birds. So instead of talking, Sarah was able to focus on her horse. Lila was a strong miler-classic prospect, given her breeding and placings thus far. She was sired by Like A Cheetah, who had won the Kentucky Derby, Breeder's Cup Sprint and Breeder's Cup Mile. Her dam was Euphoria, who was inducted in the Hall of Fame and was produced by Hall of Fame inductees herself.
Sweet Like Sugar was the first born of Hall of Fame sprinter Dash of Sugar, and sired by Hall of Fame producing stallion Sweet Sugar Cane. Her record wasn't much so far, but the filly was improving daily under the guidance of her new jockey. Jason didn't say it, but Sarah could tell he felt honoured to ride Candy. The filly had excellent breeding, of course, and she could only get better as she matured.
After cantering for a while, they reached the six furlong marker, and broke into gallop. Neither filly was a front runner, so they didn't fight for the lead just yet. The gallop was easy at this stage, but things would heat up when they got around into the stretch. The turn came up quickly and the horses took the corner with ease, beginning to accelerate as they left it. Like A Lioness got the drop on Sweet Like Sugar, and began pouring on the speed before the turn ended. Sweet Like Sugar dug right in and under Jason's encouragement, lengthened her stride and picked up the pace dramatically. Sarah glanced back to see Sweet Like Sugar showing off her good sprinter breeding, catching up quickly to Lila. Sarah refocused on driving her filly down to the finish, knowing it was going to be close. But Lila surprised her and at the last moment put on a final burst of speed, lunging over the finish a neck ahead of Candy.
Candy threw her head up in protest of slowing down. Sarah grinned and Jason smiled back. They both knew, this wasn't over. Candy would come back to bite!
