HEADSTRONG WORKS FOR THE AKUMA BATTLECRY STAKES
DYSPHORIA WORKS FOR THE NATURAL MEMORIAL STAKES
Dysphoria was having a good year so far, having achieved five wins by May. But it was now the third week of August and the four year old filly hadn't raced since due to an injury. She'd been back in work for a few weeks now and today she was preparing for The Natural Memorial Stakes with Headstrong, who was preparing for the Akuma Battlecry Stakes. Headstrong's year wasn't bad, but they had expected more from the filly. She had had a rough start to the season which had affected her race plans. Originally she'd been headed for the Triple Crown, but unfortunately didn't even get to run in the Triple Tiara. Things were looking up now, and it was hoped Headstrong could put in a good performance for the rest of the season and come out fighting as a four year old.
The pair began with a brisk trot to warm up on the dirt track. It was a cool morning, with the first frost of the season having fallen last night. The two thoroughbreds got on fairly well, so they were quite happy to work together without pinning their ears or threatening to kick. Dysphoria was a bit of a princess at times, and Rizz was a bit of a tomboy. Standing a full four inches taller than Dee at seventeen hands high, Rizz was sometimes mistaken for a colt.
The Natural Memorial was a mile long stakes race run over dirt for horses aged over three and grade four plus. This year it had attracted five other entrants besides Dysphoria, and looked like it would be a tough race. Stella knew that the most likely winner would be Battle Wings, the Akuma Battlecry x Forbidden Wings filly from Stride Of Perfection Stables. Mourning Passion, the winner of the Kentucky Derby, was also very likely to win. Stella wasn't really worried about the rest of the field, which consisted of Red Admiral, Jazzaway and Daydream.
Moving on into canter, Marissa considered the field for the Akuma Battlecry Stakes. It had only drawn two other entries, which were Fifty In Front from Sugar Hill Farm and Restricted Access from Intepid Racing. Restricted Access was definitely the main threat, but with three wins from this season Fifty in Front was not to be forgotten. Especially as he apparently liked to lead - Headstrong wouldn't like sharing her lead.
Finally it was time to gallop, and the two fillies set off at a fast pace, held neck and neck by their riders. After rounding the turn, the pair accelerated hard into the stretch. Headstrong pulled ahead of Dysphoria, but not for long. The four year old filly picked up the pace and began to gain ground. Within moments she drew alongside Rizz, but it was too late to nab a win. Headstrong slowed up victoriously and Dysphoria fought to keep going. Both fillies were set to have good races this weekend.
