CROWNED QUEEN WORKS FOR THE PURPLE ROSE STAKES
Crowned Queen had never been good at accepting defeat. She was too full of herself, unwilling to believe another horse could be faster than her. It was what lead her to lose every race she had lost. But after each loss, she came back with such a fierce desire to win that she was almost unbeatable. So after losing the Shining Stakes to Wishing For A Heroine, it was time for round two, the Purple Rose Stakes. Again, Allouette Divine had pulled out at the last moment, instead trying her luck in the colt's race. It meant that once again, it was only Wishing For A Heroine and Jewel fighting for the sprinter's tiara. And with Wishing For A Heroine's class very much proved in the Shining Stakes, it was game on.
Jewel may have underestimated Wishing For A Heroine, but Sarah definitely had not. Nevermind, the filly would not make the same mistake again. Sarah and Jewel were well acquainted by now, and trusted each other. Trust was an integral part of any relationship, of course. But the bond between horse and rider was built upon it. Their morning workout began with a brisk trot on the dirt to warm up, bright and early. The days were getting shorter, with the sun rising a little later every morning, and setting a little earlier every evening. The leaves had turned to gold by now, and some lay on the ground around the trees. It was a cool morning, and Sarah was glad she'd worn a long sleeved shirt under her jacket.
The chestnut filly moved with ease, her long legs making ground eating strides. Her tail was like silk, held straight out behind her to wave in the breeze. Her eyes were bright, her ears alert. She was the picture of fitness and health. Sarah clucked her tongue and Jewel moved on into canter immediately. She was an easy enough horse to ride when there was no one else around. But when they had competition, she could be a bit of a handful. In the Shining Stakes, she'd fought Sarah the whole way and once she got her head in the final furlongs, she hadn't even seen Wishing For A Heroine coming. The other filly had beaten them by a neck.
It was time to gallop, and Jewel didn't need telling twice. The leggy chestnut launched forward, instantly picking up the pace. Sarah hovered over her withers, eyes focused between the filly's ears. The thoroughbred galloped strongly, taking powerful, even strides as she headed for the turn that would lead into the homestretch. She didn't go all out yet, waiting for that moment when she would be told that she could. It would be a different story if there was a workout partner galloping with them right now. As the turn ended, the three year old's strides lengthened, and her body stretched to cover more ground. Her pace quickened, but still not to the same degree as it would with someone to race. Jewel was saving that speed for the Purple Rose Stakes. She was saving that energy to go for gold.
