FURIOUS FLYER WORKS FOR THE HIGH STRUNG DERBY
BEYOND THE STARS WORKS FOR THE HATFIELDS DERBY
GREAT REVENGE WORKS FOR THE OHIO FRESHMAN STAKES
The workout began with trotting in circles and figure eights. Beyond The Stars, ridden by Stella, was easily the most well behaved of the trio. She was a stunning filly who turned heads wherever she went, and she knew it. Furious Flyer and Great Revenge were gorgeous colts, but they were seriously pains in the butt when it came to workouts. Even more so now, when they were intent on attacking each other. So, the riders kept their distance while the worked out the kinks, Beyond The Stars working between the two.
After a while they came together and switched to canter. The colts forgot trying to attack one another with Beyond The Stars running between them, and there was of course plenty of horizontal distance between them anyway. Great Revenge worked close by the rail, with Furious Flyer on the outside. Today, all three horses were working towards a race they would run on the weekend. Each was running in a different race, and of course it was hoped each would win their race. They were a talented bunch after all.
Beyond The Stars was entered in the Hatfields Derby. It was an eight furlong grade five race running at The Wire track, and her competition consisted of just two other entrants. One of them was a three year old filly named Heart Of Rio, the other a two year old colt named Fleet Street. Both contenders would be hard to beat, but Stella had faith in Beyond The Stars' ability. She was sired by Beyond His Candy and out of Flashabelle, putting multiple grade one winners in her bloodlines. They included but were not limited to Beyond The Limits, Warm Wishes, News Flash, and HOF True Enough.
Furious Flyer was entered in the High Strung Derby at the Green Horse Fields track. It was an eleven furlong race for two year olds only run on dirt. There were four other entrants to contend with, including Nocturnal Runaway, Baciami, Black Magic and Meritorious. Sarah considered Meritorious of Intrepid Racing to be their biggest competition because of her record and breeding. The others all seemed pretty equal in terms of record and breeding. All in all a tough field, but Furious Flyer had the record and the breeding, too. He could take them on. His breeding was truly special, sired by Triple Crown Champion Furious Passion and foaled by Triple Tiara Champion Born To Soar. Furious Passion was in turn sired by a grade one winner of over fifty races, and foaled by Hall of Fame mare Rising Fury who herself was the winner of over forty races, including the Breeder's Cup Classic. Born To Soar's breeding was also excellent, sired by Hall of Fame stallion The Natural, winner of the Breeder's Cup Mile and Turf, and foaled by Born To Fly, a grade one winning mare of over twenty races.
Great Revenge was entered in The Wire's Ohio Freshman Stakes. It was a nine furlong dirt race for grade five and above colts only. There were three other entries, which were arguably the best colts of the two year old dirt division. They were Palisades Pirate, Saintly Touch and Ultimate Revenge. Palisades Pirate of Stride of Perfection Stables was grade four with four wins in fifteen starts and nice breeding. Saintly Touch, owned by Witch Creek Stables, was also grade four with five wins in ten starts and very nice breeding. Ultimate Revenge was owned by Intrepid Racing and had very desirable breeding, with a record of eight starts and three wins. Great Revenge himself was on the verge of grade three with a record of 10-6-1-1. He had exceptional breeding, with four Hall of Famers in his bloodlines and all grade ones. He'd had a little time off between his last two or three starts to do a little more growing and filling out, and the colt looked nothing less than amazing. His times had only gotten better and better and Marissa was very excited for his future.
When the time came to gallop the two colts sprang forward and immediately engaged in a speed duel. It took all the strength and expertise their riders had to bring them back to a more suitable pace before they entered the turn. Beyond The Stars hung back in true closer style, practically lying in wait for the colts to tire so she could take the lead. Together the three thoroughbreds moved around the turn, a length separating the colts from the filly. Before the turn ended, Stella began to drive Star on. The filly quickly gained ground and shot through the gap Great Revenge had left on the inside. The two colts instantly responded to the filly's challenge and all three thoroughbreds pounded down the stretch, neck and neck for a time. Beyond The Stars couldn't keep up the wild pace in the end and lost by just a neck, leaving the colts to cross the line nose to nose. They were ready to be challenged in their next races - they were ready to win.
