GREAT REVENGE WORKS FOR THE EDDIE COUNTY STAKES
Well, he was supposed to race last week, in the Just A Trot Futurity, the first race of the juvenile version of the Triple Crown. But they'd missed the deadline for entries, and so now Rev was up for the Eddie County Stakes as a prep race for the Gallop to The Gallows and The Youth Challenge which ran next month. The colt had enjoyed a month off since his last race just to train and grow, especially for The Youth Challenge series and the Breeder's Cup Juvenile, now only two months away.
The grey colt moved fluidly, strength evident in each stride the equine athlete took. The son of Bank On Greatness and Vindictive Fury struck fear into all of his competitors, and Marissa knew from jockey room chatter that many of the Eddie County entrants had or were still considering scratching from the race. Rev was of course the only two year old to reach grade three this year so far, as far as Marissa knew, so they should be scared. But they should also be ready to put up a fight, because that's what she and the colt were looking for. A fight from beginning to end, wire to wire.
Dirt flicked up behind them as they cantered, leaving clouds of dust. The area was in desperate need of rain - they hadn't had rain in months except for a slight sprinkle here and there. Not enough to even settle the dust. Marissa pushed the thoughts of the drought behind them, focusing only on her thoroughbred and his upcoming race. The Eddie County Stakes was a mile long, perfect for a prep race. Rev was best suited to distances between a mile and eleven furlongs, but he could also sprint seven furlongs and go as long as twelve.
All in all, the field they were up against was pretty solid. There were a few other front runners, which could potentially be problematic. Only because Rev hated to share the lead - he was known to lash out at other horses - not because the colt couldn't handle the pace.
