LAWLIET'S GIRL AND STUDLEY DUDLEY WORK FOR THE CAULFIELD CUP
Big three turf races were ahead of them. Not to mention the Breeder's Cup, in just over two months' time. The first of them, the Caulfield Cup, ran this coming weekend. Both Studmuffin and Lolly were entered, and this morning the pair were no friendlier to one another than usual. And if you weren't aware, they detested each other. Stud was up to the usual show off antics, while Lolly carefully ignored him, her head slightly tilted away from his as if he wasn't worth a glance.
The thoroughbreds continued their warm up, cantering around the turn into the back straight. The riders took the time before they galloped to consider the upcoming race thoughtfully. The race was a mile on turf, grade three and above. In gate one was G1 mare Once Upon A Dream. Once upon a time, the five year old had been a top contender in every race she ran. This year however, after some time off, the mare had not been performing like she used to, and was probably due to retire. In gate two was Sillenia. Sillenia was a three year old grade three filly, who was a consistent contender on both surfaces. Gate three would hold Wildly Natural, the excellent four year old G1 filly out of Hall of Fame Inductees Wild Flower and The Natural.
Then came our two. Lawliet's Girl was five years old, by HOF Merry Bay King. She was G1, and had most recently won one of the biggest turf races of the year, the G1 Universal Cup*. Studley Dudley was a four year old G1 stallion, who had been off for a while but had made a spectacular comeback in the Autumn Cup G2 Turf*, which upgraded him to G1. His lineage wasn't spectacular, but the young stallion could certainly run when he wanted to.
