INDIAN DELIGHT WORKS FOR THE BREEDER'S CUP MILE
SERAPHIM WORKS FOR THE BREEDER'S CUP FILLY AND MARE SPRINT
WINDBREAKER WORKS FOR THE BREEDER'S CUP TURF SPRINT
They were all entered in different races, but each was a sprinter so they worked together. As they warmed up on the turf track, the riders were silent, each contemplating their own upcoming races. Indian Delight was entered in the Breeder's Cup Mile. He would be up against just two other horses, following two scratchings. Firebird, and Executioner's Apprentice. Firebird was relatively new to the racing scene, with only nine starts under his belt, but already he was making a splash. In those nine starts he'd won four times, placed second once and third twice. Executioner's Apprentice, however, was the one to beat. He'd won his way to G1 this year, and had a record of 32-16-10-4. He'd won the Melbourne Cup most recently, which was a major achievement.
Indian Delight himself was G1 with a record of 43-14-13-16. He would be retiring after this race, and Sarah hoped he would go out with a bang. He'd been third last year, so hopefully this year would be his time to shine, and take the Breeder's Cup Mile win home. Now, the young stallion trotted proudly, his neck arched and his tail held high like a banner.
Seraphim was to run in the Filly and Mare Sprint, and would be taking on four other fillies and mares in the race. Native Gold was in gate one. She was a five year old with a record of 26-5-8-5. Four year old mare The Goodness was in gate two. She had a record of 30-5-6-3, but had not won at all this year. Four year old Mystical Melody had drawn gate three, and had a record of 41-12-9-11. Afterglow was in the last gate after Seraphim. She was the same age as Sera, and had a record of 30-8-13-4. She'd be switched to the F&M Sprint last minute from the Ladies Classic.
Seraphim herself was three years old and grade two. The daughter of HOF sprinter stallion Flying Colours had won the Juvenile Sprint last year and really wanted the win in the F&M Sprint this year. With a win in the Star Festival*, plus four others this season, she was right on track.
Windbreaker was running in the Breeder's Cup Turf Sprint.
