BLUE ME AWAY WORKS FOR THE CHAMPAGNE STAKES
Blaze still couldn't believe his luck. He'd been working with the colt
a few weeks now, and was beginning to form a bond with the black thoroughbred. He was the kind of horse Blaze liked best - gutsy and energetic, dominant without the crazy. He was Blue Me Away.
Blue trotted briskly on the turf track as they warmed up for a solo workout. They were putting in their last gallop before the Champagne Stakes, the last race in the Turf Challenge series for two year olds. Blue had run third in the AJC Sire's Produce Stakes two weeks ago, a race they had hoped but not expected to win. This time, however, Blaze knew they were expected to win. The field was a good one, and Blue was a great horse.
Bred by Star Thoroughbreds and owned by Silver Stride Stables, and now on lease back to Star Thoroughbreds. Silver Stride Stables owners were having difficulties at the present time and needed their horses to remain in training so they had been dispersed back to their breeders under lease contracts. Blue was to continue on his path to the Breeder's Cup Juvenile Turf.
Blue switched to canter as Blaze asked for it, and almost accelerated right into gallop. Oh no you don't. Blaze said grinning. He had to admire the colt's eagerness to go for a run and his respect for boundaries. It made him even more enjoyable to ride, because he wasnt constantly fighting for his head. Blaze remembered the AJC's field and then the Champagne field. Grade four colt Abastor, who had won the AJC Sire's Produce Stakes was entered. There was also grade three colt Mastermind, grade five colt Ode To Glory and the only filly in the field, Mini Monstorm. Blue himself was on the verge of grade three with a record of 11-6-3-2.
Blaze leaned forward to rub the colt's neck, while being careful not ti release him at all. With each passing moment he was beginning to realise more and more how much htheir performance in the Champagne Stakes would matter. With Silver Stride Stables potentially closing for good, Blue could potentially be sold back to Star Thoroughbreds and therefore potentially be His next full time mount. Not to mention the impact his performance in the race could have on his Breeder's Cup run and then his entire career. Yes, there was alot riding on this race they were expected to win.
Realising he was starting to stress, Blaze closed his eyes momentarily and breathed deeply. Then he sent Blue flying into gallop. Nothing like a speedy four furlong breeze to make him forget.his worries. Besides, Sarah was holding a stopwatch at the finish. Then they would see just what Blue had to give. Blaze lowered himself over the colt's withers and guided him through the turn. Now with two furlongs to go, he started to really urge the black thoroughbred on, calling praise as the horse picked up speed.
The wind rushed by Blaze's ears, and Blue had his flat against his head. The colt's legs stretched out, covering more ground with each stride. His hooves poundrd the turf, possibly sending clumps flying behind them. Blaze could feel the sheer power in every step the colt took, something he'd rarely felt before. Blue Me Away was strong and he was mighty fast. And he was giving it for Blaze. As they crossed the finish, Blaze glanced at their timer. The look on Sarah's face said everything Blfaze already knew. They'd just smashed every time the colt had put in since arriving a Star Thoroughbreds. Blue Me Away was ready to pop the Champagne Stakes!
