AKUMABUELLE WORKS FOR THE PINK STAKES

The daughter of Akuma Battlecry and Deabuelle looked magnificent. She was the last worker of the day, as the heat was beginning to rise on this summer morning. Sarah launched herself into the saddle, gathering the reins with a big smile. She had been riding the filly since the third week of March, and Akumabuelle's performance had much improved. She had placed second in all three of their starts, and seemed completely ready now to pull a win.

Their next race together was the Pink Stakes, in April Week One. It was an eight furlong race over dirt for grade fives only. There was only one other entrant, following a scratching, and that was two year old filly Silver Serendipity. The In Stride Racing thoroughbred had a record of 7-1-3-2, and would be gunning for the win as she had not won since February. She was primarily a sprinter however which could affect how well she ran in the race.

James didn't give any instruction to Sarah, trusting her to know what the filly's workout schedule was, and unclipped the lead from the young thoroughbred's halter. His eyes said it all - be careful. He had always been protective of her, since they had first gotten together. But since they had had a baby together, he was even more so. Obviously, horse racing was a dangerous game and Sarah had fallen off twice since returning to the track. No injuries, just bumps and bruises, but it terrified her husband to think he could lose her any time she rode a horse.

Shaking the thoughts from her mind, Sarah concentrated on Akumabuelle. The pretty bay filly was feeling good, and showed it by high stepping her trot with her nose and her tail in the air.
