SUGAR RUSH AND CROWNED QUEEN WORK FOR THE LUCKY DAY FUTURITY
The pair were entered in the Lucky Day Futurity, and it looked to be an incredibly tough race. They were vying for the title of Sprint Queen within the stables, but it would be harder to rule over the sprinters of other stables as well. Currently Crowned Queen was on top of her age group within Star Thoroughbreds, living up to her name, but how long that would last? Sugar Rush was an excellent filly also and then there was the others who liked longer distances.
Home comps aside, the Lucky Day Futurity would come down to more than luck and more than talent. The winner would need plenty of both, and the field was definitely full of talent. They would be racing a grade three, Tears No More, an Akuma Battlecry x Forbidden Wings filly who was grade four, and a half sister of Born To Soar. Sweet Sugar Cane sired Sugar Rush had strong sprinter siblings, and Crowned Queen was sired by Hall of Fame sprinter stallion Flying Colours. The field in its entirety was very well bred and all had at least two wins behind them already.
The pair of fine fillies began their warm up on the dirt track at a brisk trot. They were paddock buddies, workout buddies, race buddies and were even stabled next door to each other. It was fair to say, they were actually friends. Frenemies on the track, but friends off of it. They were quite competitive with each other, with one seeming to win their workout mini race one session, the other winning the next. After a short while, they moved onto canter, both giving a sign of their agreement in going faster. For Sugar, she kind of jumped into canter. Jewel did the opposite, by kicking up her heels slightly.
The Lucky Day Futurity was a mile long race, the longest distance at which the pair could run and run well at. It would be a testing race, that was for sure. Three of the five entrants were front runners, which would mean alot of speed. Sugar Rush was one of them, so they'd have to play it by ear with her and see if she could actually lead the race safely without burning out, or bring her back behind the other two to run with Jewel. The second option was more likely. Fly By Darkness was the only horse besides Jewel that didn't run as a front runner, and the Born To Fly filly would bring up the rear in midpack position. She and Jewel would likely have the advantage in the race, given that they wouldn't run flat out trying to lead it until the stretch.
Finally it was time to gallop, and the pair switched to gallop the instant the cue came. Sugar immediately asserted herself as the leader, and Jewel hung back with her nose equal to Sugar's shoulder. They would do a six furlong run, with a two furlong sprint at the end. That should knock off the excessive energy the fillies would otherwise have come race day. Up the backstretch they galloped, positions unchanging. Their riders, Blaze on Sugar Rush and Olivia on Crowned Queen, were still practically unknown to the racing world but both were just starting to become recognised in the jockey room. They'd beaten some good jockeys on some good horses and finally those jockeys were beginning to respect them as jockeys. It would not be long until their apprentice days were over.
The pair of thoroughbreds entered the turn fast and slowed slightly. Two year olds were still very inexperienced and could drift out too much or slip when they took corners to quickly. Both Blaze and Olivia had seen it happen during races and it was not a nice outcome for either horse or rider. The turn eventually straightened out into the stretch and the battle was on. Sugar put on a burst of speed but Jewel was right there with her, already they were neck and neck. They began a speed duel, and for a while it seemed they would dead heat it. But Jewel managed to find another gear right at the last moment and launched herself ahead to win the workout race by a head. Slowing the horses, Blaze and Olivia high fived, grinning widely. These fillies were ready to rock the Lucky Day Futurity.
