LIKE A LIONESS WORKS FOR THE IN REALITY STAKES
BEYOND THE STARS WORKS FOR THE COMING HOME MAIDEN
Sarah mounted up on Lila, and Stella mounted up on Star. The two fillies were bred to perfection and would soon make their first starts. Today, they were putting in their final workout before their debuts.
Lila, known as Like A Lioness, was sired by Like A Cheetah and out of Hall Of Fame mare Euphoria, who was in turn out of Hall of Fame mare Bank On Silver and sired by Hall Of Fame stallion True Enough. With the heart of a lion Lila was tough and feisty as they come, ready to do whatever it took to beat the boys. She seemed to be a bit of a feminist, with her obvious dislike for the entire male gender. Therefore, she worked harder to beat the boys than she did to beat the girls. Star, who was known as Beyond The Stars, also had True Enough for a grand sire, and had a pedigree just as star studded as her blue blooded workout partner. She was pretty much the opposite of Lila in terms of personality - she lived for attention, and thrived on male attention in particular.
Both fillies would possibly one day be pointed towards the Triple Tiara, or perhaps towards the Red Mile series. Or one to one, the other to the other. For now it was irrelevant, as they were only preparing for their very first races. Beyond The Stars was entered in the Coming Home Maiden. It was a mile long over the dirt and had attracted a field of four. Two out of their three competitors had raced before. Like A lioness was entered in the 8.5 furlong In Reality Stakes, which had attracted four fillies beside herself. Like in Star's race, two of them had already made their debuts.
Trotting side by side the fillies were working together in harmony. It was nice when they didn't have to ride horses that hated each other and wanted to kick and bite each other the whole way. Lila and Star were friends and had been since the day Star moved in. That hadn't been too long ago, just about six weeks. Star had thankfully been in training before coming to Star Thoroughbreds, so she was almost as fit as her fellow juvenile stablemates.
Sarah frowned slightly, feeling slightly stressed out. She actually wanted to retire from racing but they had not yet been able to find a good few jockeys to ride for them permanently. She had planned to retire at the end of this year, or the end of next, whenever Born To Impress retired. But then along came Fly By Darkness, who she simply had to ride, and now she was riding two year olds as well. It was stressful because Star Thoroughbreds was still growing despite their attempts to downsize. The racing string was consistently at least thirty five strong, and there was only herself, Marissa, Stella, Olivia and Blaze to race them. Truthfully, Marissa was riding the majority of them. She was a bit crazy, a bit of a workaholic and often said she would probably die racing. Amazingly, she had never been seriously injured.. yet.
As they moved onto canter Stella glanced over at her employer and friend and bit her lip. There was a shortage of good riders looking for jobs right now, and she knew that Sarah wanted to hire a few. Stella also knew that Sarah was stressed over it, wanting to spend more time with her baby boy and have another baby soon too. Stella felt a little stressed herself - it was hard work to ride six days a week, especially in the new year, and when she hadn't had a holiday in so long.
The time came to gallop and the grey and the dark bay thoroughbreds accelerated right on cue. Their gallops strides were full of power and promise as they thundered towards the turn, held nose to nose to keep the competitive fire burning. Lila would be run in stalker position on race day, whereas Star would run as a closer. They rounded the turn quickly, slowing down only slightly on the tightest part of the curve. As the stretch straightened out before them, their legs did too. Together they pounded the dirt, racing now to be first to the finish. Who was faster? who was stronger? There was no telling just yet. They continued to battle it out through the final furlong, and the less fit filly gave up an inch, then a nose. It was Lila's workout by a nose! The pair slowed up, breathing hard. As they trotted back to the gap, Lila looked triumphant and Star looked ready for revenge. They were ready for the respective debut races.
