CLASSY GIRL AND VOODOO DOLL WORK FOR THE UP THE STAKES RACE
KING GEORGE WORKS FOR THE UNICORN HORN TURF*
All they needed was a chance. One chance, to prove they were worth it. All the time, the blood, the sweat and the tears. And the Up The Stakes race would be their chance. It wasn't going to be an easy race, though. The other fillies entered were equally talented and also waiting for their big break. Voodoo Doll and Classy Girl were being pointed to the Turf Triple Crown and the Turf Triple Tiara respectively, and they needed to go for a one-two result here. That was why they were here today, on the beach instead of the track.
King George and Blaze crashed through the surf joyfully, while Classy Girl and Stella scrambled up the dunes. Marissa and Voodoo Doll were down the other end of the beach, racing back at full speed. A minute later, their roles had changed. Dolly and Marissa were taking a swim, King George was tackling the sand dunes and Classy Girl was galloping up the beach. Another few minutes passed, and they changed up their workout again. For the rest of the beach workout, they did each exercise again.
As they cooled off with a gentle trot on the shady trail home, each rider thought about their upcoming races and chances of winning. Blaze knew King George was considered the long shot of the Unicorn Horn Turf, but they didn't know the colt like he did. George was slightly inconsistent, yes, but on a good day he could smash out a record breaking run in any race. Blaze had been working hard with him especially over the last few weeks to build the colt's stamina and speed. George had been pushed harder than ever before, now that he was officially a year older and a year more mature. They had in fact been following a workout routine similar to Passionate Flyer's. Just less intense, since George was still maturing.
As for Classy Girl, well, she was classy. She was good enough to be the best. She had simply had bad lucky in several of her starts, and it could only be hoped her luck would change for the better this year because the filly was so much better than her record told. With the Turf Triple Tiara on the cards, she had to overcome some pretty good competition to get there. It was similar for Voodoo Doll, whose temper was the only thing that prevented her taking the win sometimes. She was very similar to Rising Fury and her offspring in that aspect, and Marissa knew the filly would get better with age and maturity. Once she stopped blowing her top when the slightest thing went wrong, she'd get over the line in first every time.
They dropped back to walk as they exited the forest trail and the stables came into view. The horses were slightly tired, but still had days of paddock rest to recover before the race. They were ready to take a chance, and take a win.
