Candy takes after her dam in terms of personality. She can be very unpredictable, going from calm and quiet one minute to completely unruly the next. She is intelligent, and when she's quiet you can tell she's thinking something over. If she's going a bit crazy, it's because whatever she was thinking about has her angry, terrified or excited. On the track, Candy is be difficult to handle because she is usually excited about the race she is about to run. She is like that in workouts, too, because there is usually someone ahead of her to try and chase down. She needs a firm but kind handed rider to keep her speed under control for much of the race as stamina is not a sprinter's forte.

Sweet Sugar Cane x Dash Of Sugar

Sweet Sugar Cane is a retired grade one stallion who was versatile in terms of distance on the dirt track. As a Breeder's Cup Sprint winner, he has been valued as a sprint and mile sire and is the sire of Hall of Fame Inductee Deadly Desires, as well as G1 mares Windbreaker, Afterglow and Sugar Jayde. Dash of Sugar is a Hall of Fame sprinter mare who won the Breeder's Cup Filly and Mare Sprint twice, as a three year old and as a four year old, as well as the Breeder's Cup Turf Sprint in her last season. Sweet Like Sugar is her first offspring.

Candy definitely has the speed to lead races wire to wire, but when there is no one in front of her to try and beat, she loses interest. Therefore we run her behind at least one other horse, and keep her speed firmly under control until the final stages of a race. It has to be timed just right, so that Candy wins by a length or less. If she can't see her competitors, there's no one to race and therefore no reason to run in her mind.
